Sono-Tek wrote its explanation into the headline at 7 AM: fiscal second-quarter and first-half 2027 results "Driven by Strong Medical Sector and Higher Value Production Systems."
$SOTK is -17.42% pre-market anyway.
This is a $97M machinery maker, not a low-float pump, so the gap is a reading of the report. A headline is the company choosing which lines to read aloud. The tape reads the whole release, including whatever the title skipped. Both can be accurate. Only one of them sets the price.
The cross-stock history for scale: 381 earnings-day sessions where a stock priced $1 or more opened at least 15% lower after a before-the-open report. The close finished above the open 48% of the time and below it 51%, with a median open-to-close of -0.39%. In that sample, the gap did the moving and the session after the bell barely leaned. That is history across stocks, not Sono-Tek's odds.
The title tells you what management wants weighed first. The rest of the release is what the market weighed.
