Two documents about Duolingo's users arrived a few hours apart overnight, and they disagree on purpose.
The quarter: revenue $309.01 million, up 13.7% and 1.43% above consensus; subscription revenue up 17.6%; 64.9 million daily active users; EPS $0.54, a penny under the $0.55 estimate. $DUOL is +20.31% before the bell on that.
The lawsuit notice, carrying a December 7 application deadline: the company allegedly "deliberately added friction" to the app, more ads and more upselling, and that friction harmed DAU growth.
Read them together and the miss is not the penny. The friction the plaintiffs call damage is the same mechanism that turns a free user into 17.6% subscription growth. The complaint and the income statement are describing one turnstile from opposite sides of the arm.
The cross-stock history for the open does not take sides either: 198 prior earnings-day sessions where a stock opened at least 20% above the previous close. 44% closed above that open, 55% below, median finish 0.54% under the open. Half a coin, not a tailwind.
What neither the press release nor the plaintiffs settle is whether the users who hit the paywall keep coming back. The December 7 deadline is for the lawyers; the DAU line gets re-read at the next quarter's print.
For scale: #FTK beat by 54.55% with revenue 18.62% above estimates and is +19.20% premarket, a smaller gap than the company that missed by a penny. The headline's verb is not what the gap is pricing.
