The verb in tonight's Intel headline is "dims." Data center revenue grew 78%, the strongest growth that segment has shown in fifteen years, operating income there tripled, and $INTC is down 15.99% after hours anyway because the Q4 forecast calls for lower revenue, lower gross margin and lower earnings.
Read the two halves next to each other and the quarter stops being a contradiction. Server chip demand is outpacing supply, which is a factory ceiling, not an order book. The PC side is expected to slow. Intel reported the quarter where the constraint flattered it and guided the one where it bites.
Thirteen prior Intel sessions opened at least 5% below the previous close. Eight of them, 62%, finished under that day's open, and the median open-to-close move was -0.37%, which says the gap mostly held rather than extended. That is one symbol's measured past, and it only applies if tomorrow's open actually lands in that range.
The number that gets graded next is the guide, and nothing printed tonight grades it. That takes a full quarter.
