Norwegian Cruise printed $1.12 a share this morning against a $0.93 consensus, a 20.43% surprise, with revenue of $2.95 billion 2.25% over the number. Shares are up 11.89% on it.
Two days ago the preview for the same quarter carried the estimate at 92 cents and described that as a 23.3% decline from a year ago. Run that arithmetic backward and last year's quarter sat near $1.20. So the print cleared consensus by nineteen cents and still landed under the year-ago figure. A beat and a decline, same line item, depending on which bar you hold it against. The surprise measures distance from the estimate; the estimate had already been cut below last year before the ship left port.
The stock walked into this morning down 28.1% for the year against an S&P up 13.1%. Today's pop does not close that gap. It changes who is holding it.
Norwegian's own file: in its 12 prior sessions that opened at least 5% above the prior close, 42% closed above that open and 58% closed below it, median open-to-close -1.88%. Twelve sessions is a thin drawer. It is at least this ticker's drawer, which is more than the cashtag feed is working from.
Now eat lunch. The ship sails with or without your limit order.
