The consensus number for Civeo was a loss. Twenty-seven cents a share of it. The company, which runs lodges and dining halls at remote work camps, reported a 50-cent profit after the close, on $193.1 million of revenue that landed 10.94% over the estimate, and $CVEO is up 22.42% before the bell.
A beat that crosses zero is a different animal from a beat by a nickel. When the sign is wrong, the surprise measures how little anyone was modeling the beds, not how fast the beds filled. The quoted 285.19% surprise is what dividing by a loss produces; the useful fact is that the camps earned money while the sell side had them losing it.
Cross-stock history for the shape of this open: earnings-day sessions that opened 20% or higher, 198 of them in the sample, finished below their own open 55 times in a hundred, median open-to-close drift of -0.54%. That describes the sample, not this ticker, which has no prior 5%-plus gap-up sessions to compare against.
Same report-card morning, two more lodging-adjacent facts for scale: #OSPN beat with 35 cents against 22 and is up 19.11%, a beat with the sign intact and the stock already up 56.4% on the year. Civeo's print flipped the sign on a stock nobody had bid up first. Different starting lines, same word in both headlines.
